How to Achieve One-of-a-Kind Marine Carpet Installations
Installing carpet on your boat deck is a job that can completely change the look of your boat. In order to achieve the ultimate end product, you’re going to need to pay attention to detail and commit to a bit of hard work. Here are some basics for successful marine carpet installations.
1. Plan carefully: Before application can even begin, prepare the surface and carpet — the surface must be sound, smooth, clean, and dry and the carpet should warm in the sun for a short period to remove wrinkles and soften the backing. When measuring the area, allow yourself extra material to do so. And always apply carpeting in a well-ventilated area.
2. Select the right materials: TEC® Skill Set™ Outdoor Carpet Adhesive is a premium, solvent-free paste that’s easy to spread and has excellent bond strength. It’s environmentally friendly and water resistant when cured, which makes it ideal for that marine environment.
Most people are nervous to install boat carpet because they think it’s hard and time-consuming. TEC® Skill Set™ Outdoor Carpet Adhesive empowers do-it-yourselfers to take charge of their project because it provides professional results.
3. Spread the Adhesive: For successful installation, apply TEC® Skill Set™ Outdoor Carpet Adhesive to the substrate first with the flat side of the trowel; then comb with the notched side of the trowel in one direction. Make sure you get plenty of adhesive on the surface and apply it evenly.
Do not apply more adhesive than can be covered within 20 minutes. Drying time will vary with the temperature, humidity, and the substrate, so plan accordingly to make sure the adhesive doesn’t skin over at any point. Direct sunlight accelerates adhesive drying time and can minimize the adhesive transfer to carpet backing.
4. Lay Out the New Carpet: Rolling the carpet over the TEC® Skill Set™ Outdoor Carpet Adhesive provides the smoothest results for your boat deck. Stiff carpet should be rolled again after two hours.
For professional results, the flooring material, room and adhesive should be kept at 50°F (10°C) for at least 48 hours before, during, and after installation, and heavy foot traffic should be avoided for 72 hours. The application should be protected from rain for five days after application.
